Welcome-to-Typography

Typography is everywhere we look.

Just look at your phone, a billboard or road signs, your coffee cup, or even the different styles used in blog posts.  It is in the books we read, on the websites we visit, bumper stickers, and product packaging even in everyday life— to name a few.

Typography can invoke a feeling, remind you of a certain brand, or create an atmosphere. In branding, think about the boldness of the FedEx logo (with a sneaky hidden arrow!) or the classic blackletter style of The New York Times’ masthead. For editorial typesetting, think about the layout of your favourite magazine. And on your phone, think about how different fonts are used across different apps.

But when typography is created badly, it can be jarring and distracting, even unreadable. Think about the last time you were confused by messy type in an app or be misled by unclear signage or struggled to understand an illegible pamphlet or packaged product.

When you think about it, the art and science of typography is the basis of all communication such as logos, ad copy, headlines in magazines, and newspapers or chapter headings in a book.

Typography gives character and plays an emotive role in every design, even if you do not notice it!

Why TYPOGRAPHY

The main purpose of typography is to create a message of your brand or services without using any image. Typography not only enhances the beauty of your web design or your graphic design but it can also easily grab the reader attention and guide them naturally, all with the use of only text.

Turns out that while the importance of typography is often overlooked, it plays a critical role in strengthening your brand, creating interest in your product, and highlighting your central message

FACT

Steve Jobs only college course he took was on calligraphy and typography, which he believed played a critical role in the success of Apple. As he once said in a Stanford University commencement speech, "If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts." Can you imagine a world where Apple products didn't have a focus on beautiful design? I certainly can't.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT REALLY?

Every font, letter, and character arrangement play an important part in determining how a message is conveyed.

It provides attractive appearance and preserves the aesthetic value of your content. It plays a vital role in setting the overall tone of your publication, and ensures a great user experience

It might seem trivial at times, but even the smallest of type adjustments can impact the look and feel of your work. For example, Facebook tested a new font on its users called Geneva. While the new font was only slightly thinner and lighter than the original, Helvetica, it made a noticeable difference to some.

So paying attention to even the littlest details of type can be so significant in the world when you're laying out an email, e-book, or image for social media and so forth.

Once you realize how much thought goes into carefully selecting a typeface, it becomes much easier to recognize the differences between typefaces and understand why they might’ve been chosen in the first place.

CONCLUSION - Typography is all about adjusting the text within the design while creating powerful content. It provides attractive appearance and preserves the aesthetic value of your content. It plays a vital role in setting the overall tone of your website, and ensures a great user experience

In an ever changing, fast-paced world, our brains come into contact with millions of points of information every day. We only process a fraction of that data. Apparently we remember 80% of what we see, yet only 20% of what we read.

The best brands obtain cut-through in an information-rich world by turning content heavy information into strong data visualisation or, more specifically: Infographics.

Visual communicators such as Graphic Designers provide a great opportunity to turn data into something engaging and educational. For example, you may have an impressive statistic that runs the risk of being lost in a 395 page report. This is where Infographics can work brilliantly to grab attention from the viewer.

The BALANCE

Here at Distant Corner Designs we use a self-cultivated scale to measure the levels

of ‘factual’ to ‘conceptual’ data when envisaging the design and layout of an Infographic.

The ideal outcome is that the concept should fall into the middle of the scale,

so that the Infographic is telling a visually engaging story.

Depending on the data, Infographics can be split into three tiers:

  • Tier 1: Data visualisation (line / bar / pie charts)

  • Tier 2: Information design (visually engaging infographics)

  • Tier 3: Conceptual (communicating a message that users remember)

A successful Infographic bridges the gap between the communication of data and an idea.
